Guidance Notes for Volunteers at the ARRC

Appropriate clothing is essential - it can be very wet windy and cold at the ARRC - even during the summer months.

Please don’t ask the staff about the dogs.  The cute dog you saw last week may have become aggressive or ill and had to be put to sleep, my girls find it very difficult to lie and telling you the truth may upset you, and it does upset them.  Border collies for example do not take well to being confined, and they are not the easiest dog to find a home for. After several weeks of confinement they can become aggressive or ‘snappy’ which renders them unsuitable for homing, Wildlife N.I. Does not keep animals that cannot be rehomed.  During the weeks a dog is here my staff do become attached to them and it is upsetting for them when they have to put a dog to sleep.
Safety Rules
We are very relaxed at the ARRC, but for safety we do have some rules which MUST be followed.

1. Access to all animals is by permission only, do not enter the dog kennels without permission from the full-time kennel staff or approach the wild animal pens without express permission from the centre manager.

2. The Reptile house is totally off limits (even to the full-time staff)

3. Proper safety gear must be worn for any task you perform.

4. The use of onsite machinery is restricted to the full-time staff only.

5. Use the disinfectant hand wash provided after handling any animal.

6. Don’t run

7. No messing around, someone ALWAYS gets hurt.

8. Be polite and courteous to everyone, staff and visitors alike

Notes for Rescue Volunteers

There is one VERY important rule for volunteers conducting rescues.
DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN DANGER OR TAKE RISKS!

Your life is more important than any animal, do not put yourself in a position were you may get hurt or worse, if a rescue can’t be easily carried out without equipment you don’t have - DON’T try, call for back up and we can get the necessary equipment to you.
