In the past we have tried various ‘SatNav’ programs to try to get us to rescues quicker. The problem in Northern Ireland though, was the lack of a program that had adequate map coverage in Northern Ireland, many I have tried don’t even have the main Ballymoney to Portrush ‘B’ road, let alone the smaller ‘B’ road to our centre.
Previously if we got a second call, we had to telephone the ambulance driver, who then had to stop the car, and re program the SatNav to see if the new destination was actually on the map. Now with CoPilot Live someone back back at base can take a rescue call, send a note to the driver on his phone or pda via Copilot, the driver then decides if he can make the call and responds by pressing a button on the pda which automatically recalculates a new route for him.
We got a Good deal from O2 on four XDA Orbits, each is loaded with Copilot and linked to Copilot Fleetcentre. We can now see in ‘realtime’ on the base PC where each vehicle is and send new calls to the nearest ambulance and monitor their progress, including their speed, ETA and any deviation from the route, Maddy hates being told where to go and often turns the volume down on the voice guidance, so it’s handy to be able to call her or send a message saying she’s missed a turn. Maddy and Colin are both from England and still have a lot of sightseeing to do. Between calls they usually take a break to see the sights, Copilot enables them to input nearby points of interest and go, but at the same time lets me know where they are in case a rescue call comes in.
Copilot has a free online tracking system for ‘Single’ users too. My Mother likes to travel in Europe during the winter, with ‘Copilot live’ she can give her friends the secure web address and they can follow her progress.
But even just for your own in car or on foot use I highly recommend CoPilot as a very good SatNav system for your PDA or Mobile Phone with the most up to date maps I’ve seen for Northern Ireland.
